Earlier this week I ran into a problem using the Application Task, in a task sequence, and prestaged media in SCCM 2012. The problem was, all my task sequences work fine, but when I created my prestaged media, the installation of the included applications would fail. Packages would work fine, but any application that was set to install as an application (using the Application Task) would cause the task sequence to crash.

This behaviour was consistent, regardless of how I structured my Application Tasks, or which applications installed first.

However, if I only prestaged the operating system, forcing the client to download the application from the distribution point; the task sequence and applications installed as expected.

When the prestaged task sequence failed, I looked in the smsts.log file, and saw these errors.

Whilst I am not 100% sure what caused these errors, I managed to resolve them by making a few simple changes to my task sequence. The changes were:

1. During the Setup Windows and Configuration Manager task, I specified SMSCACHEFLAGS=PERCENTDISKSPACE;NTFSONLY SMSCASESIZE=10. This is in addition to the installation properties (SMSMP, FSP etc) I already had in there.

2. Immediately before my Application installation tasks, I inserted a computer reboot to restart into “The currently installed default operating system”

After performing these changes, the prestaged media works with the associated task sequence, and the applications no longer fail to install.

I recently had an issue where I was testing the creation of prestaged media using SCCM 2012 SP1, and after the WIM had deployed and I restarted the computer – the targeted computer would not boot into Windows PE. Instead, it would boot into the operating system image I had deployed. For me this was pretty useless as the WIM image I had deployed would start its OOBE setup process, and not pick up the task sequence I had targeted to it.

If you’re familiar with prestaged media in SCCM 2007, the new options and features in SCCM 2012 SP1 may catch you out. I won’t go into how to create pre-staged media or a task sequence in this post; so I’m going to assume you’ve already done all the steps to deploy your prestaged WIM. If you’ve found this post because you are trying to create pre-staged media for your OS deployment, here are some links you might find useful.

http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/cnackers/archive/2010/12/11/configuration-manager-r3-prestaged-media-setup-and-walkthrough.aspx

http://www.deploymentresearch.com/Blog/tabid/62/EntryId/21/OEM-Preload-with-ConfigMgr-2007.aspx

Anyway, back to my problem. It turns out my issue was a fairly simple mistake, and one that’s easy to make if you’re not totally familiar with SCCM 2012 Task Sequences and Prestaged Media. Typically, the SCCM task sequence to deploy your prestaged WIM would look something like this

1. Format Disk

2. Deploy WIM Image

3. Shutdown

What caught me out, was for Step 2, I had the task “Apply Operating System Image”, when it should have been “Apply Data Image”.

This is what your task sequence should look like for it to work properly…

The “Apply Data Image” step is found here…

Use that to deploy your WIM, and when you reboot, it will load into Windows PE – and then you can continue your advertised task sequence.

I recently had a problem where I couldn’t access or see the SCCM 2012 Reports, when accessing them from the SCCM 2012 Console installed on a workstation.

When I logged into the SCCM 2012 server, and ran the console locally, I could see them just fine.

In my particular situation, it turns out on my client workstation, I had a proxy enabled in Internet Explorer, but I had not ticked “Bypass proxy server for local addresses”. Once this was enabled in Internet Explorer, I closed and reopened my SCCM 2012 Console, and I was able to access the reports as expected.

I’m just putting this out there incase someone else comes across the same issue in the future.

As some of you may know, I also go by the name of “DJ Toasty” when doing my slower, more chilled out mixes. The slower tempo, melodic and chilled out sound is something that has always interested me, but until recently it’s something I haven’t had much time to explore.

Here is a track I did before under the DJ Toasty banner…

And if you’re after a full 2hr set of “DJ Toasty”, you can grab it here…
http://www.dreamension.net/?p=524

Anyway, in this episode of Universal Language, I blended together both styles. The first hour is the slower, more chilled and housey “DJ Toasty” sound, and the 2nd hour is my more upbeat, energetic and trancey “DreamensioN” sound. Don’t think of this as 2 different sets though. I’ve blended it all together to form one seamless mix. It starts out progressive and housey, moving into a more melodic & vocal trance sound, finishing with upbeat energetic sounds, with the last track bringing the tempo back down to an easy finish.

Tracklist

Costa Mappis has always had a passion for EDM. In his earlier years it was happy hardcore. Then in his late teens it was hard house and NRG but now the love of his life is Trance. Anything ranging from 128bpm progressive to 140bpm uplifting bangers. It was only a few years ago when I decided that listening to music was not enough. I wanted to be creative. So I invested in his some CDJs and a mixer. An opportunity arose to support Above & Beyond on their recent Group Therapy tour. The competition was to submit a 30 min mix. I decided to enter it for a bit of fun and to my amazement Jaytech chose my mix as the winner. To be able to support Above & Beyond as my first gig was something I will never ever forget. Since then I have supported Mat Zo, Jaytech, Kyau & Albert, Solarstone & Roger Shah. There have been various guest mixes on Nova’s Next Gen show, BAM radio and Afterhours.FM. It all happened so quickly but it’s been lots of fun.

Here’s the situation… you have Domain A containing your System Center 2012 Management Servers. You have Domain B or a DMZ (untrusted), and in there you have a Gateway Server. You’ve ensured certificates are configured correctly, Port 5723 is open across the firewall, and that clients can resolve & communicate with the Gateway Server in Domain B.

You manually install the SCOM 2012 agent on a server in Domain B. You then look in the Operations Manager log, and you see Event ID 20070 “The OpsMgr Connector connected to gatewayserver.domain.local, but the connection was closed immediately after authenticate occurred. The most likely cause of this error is that the agent is not authorized to communicate with the server, or the server has not received configuration. Check the event log on the server for the presence of 20000 events, indicating that agents which are not approved are attempting to connect.”

You look at the Operations Manager log on your Gateway Server, and you see lots of 20000 event ID’s “A device which is not part of this management group has attempted to access this Health Service. Requesting Device Name: agent01.domain.local”

Ahh – that’s right, you have to approve manually installed agents. So you jump back to your Operations Manager Console, and you look in the Administration pane, at Pending Management (under Device Management). But there are no agents listed there. What the…?

Resolution

This has caught me out, and it’s a really simple fix. By default, SCOM/Operations Manager will reject manually installed agents automatically. You need to change the setting in the Administration Pane -> Settings -> Security to “Review new manual agent installations in pending management.” Once this is ticked, you should see the agents come up in Pending Management within a few minutes, where you can approve them.

As a security best practice, I do not recommend enabling “Automatically approve new manually installed agents”. As the administrator, you should always verify each agent when it is manually installed (especially by someone else).

Danish producer Benya returns to the decks once again for another exciting guest mix on the Universal Language series. Benya (also known as Ben Bording) is well known for his tracks and remixes, as well as his collaborations with vocalist Marcie under the name of “Yamin”. The unique sound of Benya’s tracks with his rolling bassline are unmistakeable.

Benya’s guest mix comes up after a 1hr mix from me, where I play a fusion of classical music, progressive trance, and a splash of goa trance, before finishing the set where I started, in the warm envelope of a classical piano.

Enjoy this very special mix from me, and enjoy the sounds of Benya!

So here’s the info on Benya:
Danish producer Ben Bording, better known as Benya, had his debut appearance with ‘Prometheus’, but is mostly known for his remix skills on tunes such as ‘Daydream’, ‘Rush’ and ‘Entry To Heaven’. This Dane takes it easy. He’s studying to be an aircraft maintenance technician for Scandinavian Airlines, and produces in his spare time. However, he’s found another way to make people rise above the ground. ‘Serendipity’ is his lovely vocal trancer, and the second release of the new S107 imprint. Teamed up with vocalist Penny Nixon, Benya delivers a gentle, profound progressive-trancer that’s fit for the clubs and home-listening.

The Midnight remix of the track adds a few spices to make it more peak-time, while the Tenishia remix carries the listener away from the very first beat, with a mind-blowing piano break and techy surroundings.

The other day I took delivery of my brand new Nokia Lumia 900. However, I have discovered a “bug” with the phone which may catch out some people.

The problem is, when the phone is completely dead flat, if you just plug your phone into a computers USB port to recharge, or if you use some other sort of charger (like the wall plug for the iPhone/Samsung etc), the Lumia 900 won’t recharge.

After some searching, I discovered that this is a known issue on the Nokia forums, and the solution is to use the supplied Nokia wall plug to recharge the phone.

What it is, the Nokia wall plug has a higher output voltage (1A according to the forums) than the iPhone plug, or a computers USB port. The phone needs this extra juice to come back to life from a totally dead flat battery. If I attempted to recharge the phone before it went totally flat, it wouldn’t be a problem.

So the takeaways from this post are…

1. Recharge your Lumia 900 before it’s totally dead flat

or….

2. Always know where your Nokia wall charger is

Ok – I’m just putting this one out there incase someone else finds it useful.

For 2 weeks now, I’ve been trying to work out why I couldn’t add my XenServer host to SCVMM 2012. In the end it turned out to be 3 problems all adding up, but the last peice of the puzzle didn’t fall into place until just now.

I’ve just spent the last 12hrs trying to figure out this last peice, and it turns out – there is a KB that Microsoft released, which kills communications with Unix/Linux servers.

When adding XenServer in SCVMM 2012, I would get errors like this:

Error (12703) VMM cannot establish a trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel for Xenserver-01.domain.local server.

Recommended Action Install the certificate to the trusted people root store of the VMM management server and then try the operation again.

Or errors like this…

Error (2916) VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent Xenserver-01.dreamstudios.local was lost. Unknown error (0x8033810f)

Recommended Action Ensure that the WS-Management service and the agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS traffic.

This problem can also be caused by WMI service crash. Ensure that KB 982293 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982293) is installed on the machine if it is running Windows Server 2008 R2.

If the error persists, reboot Xenserver-01.domain.local and then try the operation again.

After a long night of searching, and reading up on a whole bunch of XenServer stuff…which I might add – I never want to do again…. I found this blog post.

http://outlookcloudy.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/xenserver-hosts-in-vmm2012-stop.html#!/2012/02/xenserver-hosts-in-vmm2012-stop.html

KB2585542 (which is a Security Update for Windows Server 2008 R2)…..

This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0. This vulnerability affects the protocol itself and is not specific to the Windows operating system. The vulnerability could allow information disclosure if an attacker intercepts encrypted web traffic served from an affected system. TLS 1.1, TLS 1.2, and all cipher suites that do not use CBC mode are not affected.

….this nukes communication to Linux boxes – therefore, you cannot communicate with XenServer (or in my case, you cannot add XenServers to the VMM host resource pool). Just like in the blog post by Daniel Mar, uninstalling the KB2585542 resolved my issue.

In this months’ edition of Universal Language 053, I replay a guest mix I did for Duality 002 with April Elyse Martin and Fura. This 1hr mix from me starts off with the taste of melodic house, which blends into breaks. From there I start to increase the pace a little, and I end the set with some two new remixes of some old trance classics.

Blighty returns to the show this month for another guest mix. Blighty dominates the second half of the show with this beautiful, uplifting and melodic choice of tracks. This is definitely an hour to be enjoyed.

More about Blighty:

The story….

If you are into quality progressive-trance than you have probably heard of Blighty. This Nijmegen born DJ / Producer, whose real name is Vincent Steine, has been active in the field for many years now. He has already established himself as a popular DJ at many events and festivals including the UW-XP parties, Arise, Love For People and Club Mystique. He was also invited to perform at an outdoor event in Gjovik and a club night in Oslo, Norway.

Vincent hosts a monthly radio show “Reaching Out” on both Afterhours.FM and Trancesonic.FM and is frequently asked to do guest mixes for big radio stations, like SLAM.FM, a Dutch dance music station.

His upcoming remix of “Tokyo Sunset” by Bassfinder and his track “Kärlek” on Swedish label Macarize are his next big steps in Electronic Dance Music world.

Production wise Vincent works collaborates with producers Hans Peeman and Daniel Leseman. They are planning to release more quality music in the near future so look out for those!

EDM Magazine had the privilege to chat with Dan Korzeniowski, founder of Afterhours.FM, a renowned trance internet radio station.

“We recently received the #1 spot as “Best Online EDM Radio Station” at the TrancePodium awards, so we will do our best to keep that rank.” – Dan Korzeniowski

The friendly staff at AH.FM is working hard to provide a welcoming online community, live music event broadcasts and fresh content; showcasing radio shows of various DJs and world-class artists, such as Markus Schulz, Sean Tyas, Richard Durand and Lange, all for free! Dan gives insight on his history with electronic music, the challenges an online radio station has to face and how AH.FM flourished into the respected radio station it is today. Log onto www.ah.fm and get connected!

EDM: How, when and where did you discover electronic music?

Dan: I would have to say that it all started around the year of 1996, when I saw a video of Jam & Spoon – Stella. I just fell in love with electronic music.

EDM: What inspired you to start AH.FM? Did you team up with anyone to start the station? What year did you establish?

Dan: Over the years of following the EDM scene, I had made pretty good contacts with many DJs, label sites and club promoters. I had been quite a frequent listener of many stations, and quite frankly I got to a point where I got bored of stations just looping the same sets/tracks. I had a vision of a station full of fresh music on daily basis, new sets being aired by the world’s biggest DJs. To be a place for a true EDM addict, one place where most of the best DJs play. So I wondered what it would take to create a radio station from scratch. I took some time and spoke to my DJ friends on what they think about my idea of a new station; they were thrilled with the idea and supported it. So starting in January 2006, it took basically 5 months to gather all info I would need to create the station (servers, bandwidth, money, redundancy & building the whole radio system). System was done around May 2006, then after a month of testing, we finally had an official launch June 2006.

Maybe you’re thinking why the name Afterhours? Answer is simple; while I lived in New York I always went to “afterhours” clubs to party. It seemed like anything to do with electronic music was referred to as Afterhours so that’s how I got the name.

EDM: What particular DJs/Producers are your favorites?

Dan: This is a very hard question, to be honest I respect all DJs the same way, each DJ is different in their own style and taste, they all have something that’s really unique. A listener can enjoy the ride while listening to any DJ set. I listen to all genres of EDM and it all depends on the mood and what I’m doing so I can’t really say who my favorite is.

EDM: Are there any other genres (besides Trance) that motivate you?

Dan: I listen to all types of EDM that includes: progressive, psychedelic, house, drum & bass, techno but to be honest I always enjoy and come back to the true feeling of trance.

EDM: Who were some of the first artists that joined the station?

Dan: When the station launched we had just a few DJs such as, DreamensioN, Robbie Schwan, Dave Nadz. Young DJs starting out that supported the radio as it supported them. Marcus Schossow (as Under Sun) and Manuel Le Saux also began supporting the radio really early on. We’re really grateful to the current and former resident DJs that helped spread the word in the early days.

EDM: What were some of the obstacles in creating AH.FM?

Dan: Some big issues were – How do we stand out from everyone else? What can we do that’s different in the scene? We had to figure out how to keep the community entertained, keep it enjoyable for each listener from all over the world. There were already competitors online, how would we promote ourselves and draw listeners from the existing mega-station that dominated the scene? How would we fill 24-hours a day with fresh new content? These were just some of the obstacles that we had to overcome. Online radio streaming is something that is growing each day, more and more stations launch. It’s really hard to stay competitive. There are also more options for listeners to source music, so there are still obstacles to be overcome even now, five years in.

EDM: How does AH.FM compete with mp3 downloads and podcasting?

Dan: Over the years many new services have launched which do affect the scene somewhat. Staying relevant in a world of podcasts and direct marketing is an ongoing task. To be honest we don’t try to directly compete with any services or stations, we do not work that way. Our theory of success is different; while we love to innovate new things, our recipe for success is high-quality sound, exclusive new sets daily and a friendly community. Music is a social activity, especially online. When people hear a good track, they want to tell people about it, how it makes them feel, and they want to see what others think, etc. This is what we like to tap into with our forums and chats. In some ways, it’s not the mp3s and podcasts we’re so worried about, it’s the move of listeners from forums and chat-based communication to app-based micro-posts, Facebook likes, tweets and such – or worse, to listening completely alone. Keeping ourselves engaged in those conversations is a challenge since encouraging the social aspect of listening (the community) is one of our key beliefs.

EDM: What separates AH.FM from other online radio stations?

Dan: Afterhours.FM is different in many ways, here are a few: – We provide FREE high quality streams. (We do not charge users to enjoy high quality). – We are commercial FREE. (We don’t play any ads on air). – We have 200+ of the World’s Biggest DJs producing sets exclusive for AH. (We don’t replay other station’s shows). – Have biggest/most active online Trance radio community. – We specialize in live broadcasts from some of the biggest trance parties. – Nobody does special events like AH! Ladies Night, the In the Mix series, Label days, Déjà Vu and of course the Biggest Online Radio Event, the annual End of Year Countdown.

EDM: Would the station ever consider branching out to other genres?

Dan: Honestly we see no point in branching out; the reason is these days it’s hard to really categorize specific music genres. Many tracks are labeled trance but they really are NOT trance. It’s really up to the DJ to create best possible sets for their fan base.

EDM: What are the future plans for AH.FM?

Dan: We are in final stages of launching a new website. Recently we launched our iPhone & Android apps so users can tune in via their mobile. We’re discussing plans to expand into the tablet market. We always look for possible new major live broadcasts and we have some huge ones planned for this year! Other plans include bringing in more new exclusive talent into the station & create more new special events online.

Thank you for this wonderful interview, I also wanted to thank all readers and listeners of the station for their ongoing support from myself and our wonderful staff!

Someone once told me, the problem with progressive, is that it doesn’t progress. This can be very true. Many DJ sets these days that are classified as “progressive”, are just essentially just 1 or 2 hours of music, at the same pace, in the same musical key.

This is my attempt at changing that, and exposing some new listeners to what my interpretation of progressive trance is. Though granted, not all of the tracks used in this mix are strictly “trance”. This 2hr set from me, takes you through a journey of house, prog house, goa/psy trance, building into melodic/vocal/uplifting trance. It’s my version of progressive music….progressed.

So where does the DJ Toasty name come from? Well – there is a story behind that, but the reason I’ve called this 2hr set “DreamensioN presents DJ Toasty…” is because, DJ Toasty will now be my alias when releasing slower, down tempo, left of the middle mixes. I know this set isn’t completely left of mainstream (dance/trance) music, but it is at a much slower, chilled out pace to my normal “Universal Language” DJ sets. Hence the name change.

From now on, when you see something from me that has the “DJ Toasty” name on it, expect it to be not what I normally produce. Expect it to be a different flavour of electronic music – one that (depending on your range of musical taste), maybe something you quite enjoy. Something different.

Please enjoy this 2hr set from me, of chilled beats, proggy, groovy basslines, and uplifting melodies and vocals.

What a show I have this month for you guys! Coming on Universal Language this month is Aaron Camz! Aaron lays down a huge producers set, playing all his own tracks and remixes. If you’ve been listening to the GDJB by Markus Schulz lately – you would of heard some of Aarons tracks. The dark heavy basslines and progressive beats are unmistakeable.

That awesome guest mix is after a 1hr progressive set by me.

Here is the info on Aaron Camz!

Markus Schulz knew he was onto something in 2010 when he said “I must give a big shoutout to Melbourne’s very own Aaron Camz … He’s a name I’m definitely going to be keeping an eye out for in the near future.”

Having only entered the trance circuit in 2009, Aaron Camz is rapidly making a name for himself, the diversity of his productions having already attracted support from the likes of world-class acts, including the likes of Armin Van Buuren and Markus Schulz.

Aaron creates an edgy, tech-tinged trance; fusing minimal and progressive elements and deep, dark basslines; drawing you in with bold breakdowns and a fierceness of energy which transcends to the experience he creates on the dancefloor as a DJ. “I am creating music for clubs and big arenas; I’m out to create massive dancefloor bombs that leave you standing there, speechless,” says Aaron. “I’ve had these sorts of experiences hearing big tunes for the first time at a big festival or club night in my younger days. That experience is what I want to share with others!”

Once exposed to and forever intoxicated by trance music in its underground days, Aaron draws a characteristic influence from his previous love of rock music to create dark, big room club tracks that aren’t shy to cross the boundaries of electronic styles. Aaron’s debut tracks ‘Frantic’ (2009) and ‘All That’s Left’ (2009), released on Australian label 405 Recordings, were instant dancefloor artillery, qualifying to the DJ sets of Markus Schulz, Lange, W&W, Scot Project and Bart Claessen. Aaron’s tech-trance enchanter ‘Black Noise’ (2010) was released on Marcel Woods’ Musical Madness imprint and his floor-shaking take on Mark Junior’s ‘Natural’, released on Neuroscience Recordings, rapidly paved its way as a regular feature in the sets of Markus Schulz, Rank 1, Marco V, Sean Tyas, Ernesto & Bastian, and M.I.K.E. Twice crowned as the Global DJ Broadcast’s ‘Global Selection’ track of the week, the Aaron Camz remix firmly made its mark in the Global DJ Broadcast top 25 of 2010. Remixing Mike Foyle’s ‘Space Guitar’, Aaron earned his place in the revered ‘Coldharbour 100′, a celebration of the best of Coldharbour. It’s no surprise Aaron’s tracks have gained quick recognition, by uniting the driving force of the club ambiance with a soulful expression of sound that can only come from deep within.

Touring with club gigs around Australia’s main cities, Aaron continues to go from strength to strength, supporting some of the biggest names in the business, including at Armada’s sold out club event, “Armada Nights”, as well as Australia’s version of the revered UK festival Creamfields. His newest original production, ‘Room to Breathe’, released under Coldharbour Recordings, is featured on Markus Schulz’ Prague ’11 compilation.

At only 22, joining ‘Coldharbour Recordings’ after a personal request from Markus Schulz, signing on with Armada Music in 2011 with current releases on Pilot 6 and Coldharbour Recordings, and upcoming releases on High Contrast and Spinnin’ Records, the future looks very promising!

It’s been a couple of months since my last update, but that’s because I’ve been away on honeymoon! The last mix I did for Afterhours.FM was for the 5th Year Anniversay back in June. July was a busy month with the wedding, and I was overseas during August & September.

Well I’m pleased to announce that Universal Language continues as usual on Afterhours.FM, and for October, I have a very special guest mix by Swiss duo GRAND CANYON!

My smooth, and melodic set gives way to an amazing journey through trance by Grand Canyon. Check out the tracklist from these guys and have a good listen to their own mashups used in the set. This is definately one to download and keep. Personally – I’ve listened to their set in my car more than a dozen times now, and it’s still as amazing as the first time I heard it.

Check them out, add them on facebook – and OHH! Check out Morvan’s track “Sahara” on youtube. Simply amazing!!!
